Tokayev: Water Security Represents Top Priority for Kazakhstan’s Future

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has reaffirmed that water security remains a top priority for Kazakhstan’s development strategy.

Speaking at a ceremony dedicated to Water Sector Workers' Day, he outlined key reforms and strategic initiatives that aim to ensure long-term sustainability of the country’s water resources, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

“Water security is one of the most pressing challenges of our time,” said President Tokayev, emphasizing its critical importance to national development and regional stability.

In 2023, Kazakhstan established the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, adopted a new Water Code, and initiated several major infrastructure projects, many of which are supported by foreign investment. Nearly 30,000 professionals are now working across the water sector to supply cities, rural areas, industry, and agriculture.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Highlighting the role of water diplomacy, Tokayev called for greater collaboration with neighboring countries in managing transboundary river basins.

“Kazakhstan consistently promotes the initiative to create a Water and Energy Consortium of Central Asian countries. Thanks to close regional cooperation, our farmers were fully provided with the necessary volume of water resources last year. We must continue this approach,” he said.

Rising Global Challenges

Citing global projections that water demand will exceed supply by 40 per cent by 2040, the president noted Kazakhstan’s increasing role in international water diplomacy. He referenced his participation in the One Water Summit in Saudi Arabia and announced plans to host a Regional Environmental Summit under the UN next year.

Expanding Access to Clean Water

While a majority of the population has access to clean drinking water, President Tokayev stressed the need to connect over 500 additional villages and improve water purification systems.

Investing in the Future

President Tokayev also acknowledged the shortage of qualified professionals in the field. The recently established National University of Water Management and Irrigation has doubled state-funded scholarships, with more than 500 students now enrolled and 120 professionals undergoing advanced training in China.

Preserving Strategic Water Bodies

The president called for continued efforts to safeguard Kazakhstan’s key water sources.

“We have made significant progress in restoring the Small Aral Sea, and we must now take similar steps to preserve the Caspian Sea, Lake Balkhash, and other water resources,” President Tokayev said.

Tribute to Sector Workers

He closed his remarks with a message of gratitude to the country’s water sector professionals, especially for their response during the 2023 floods.

“In such difficult times, you demonstrated fortitude and professionalism. I am sincerely grateful to all of you for your dedicated service,” he concluded.
