Why Kazakhstan’s KPI Halted Production in Atyrau

Operations at Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industries Inc. (KPI) in Kazakhstan’s Atyrau region have been temporarily suspended after a disruption in propane feedstock supplies from Tengizchevroil (TCO).

KPI said the supply interruption followed a recent emergency at TCO’s facilities, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

As a result, the hot-circulation propane dehydrogenation unit and the propylene polymerization line have been taken offline.

According to the company’s press service, KPI is actively working to reduce downtime by sourcing alternative feedstock. The company plans to secure around 11,000 tons of propane from other suppliers. As of now, propane inventories stored in on-site bullets total 3,364 tons.

KPI emphasized that it currently holds sufficient stocks of finished products to meet market demand and fully honor all existing contractual obligations.

The supply disruption traces back to January 18, 2026, when a fire broke out at the Tengiz oilfield, forcing the evacuation of more than 450 workers. Following the incident, TCO announced the suspension of oil production at the Tengiz and Korolev field fields.

On January 26, TCO reported that operations at the field had resumed.
