A presidential decree has been published in the Kyrgyz Republic, announcing the early termination of the powers of Kamchybek Tashiev, Chairman of the State Committee for National Security.
Tashiev was appointed head of the State Committee for National Security on October 16, 2020, under a decree signed by Sadyr Japarov, who was serving as acting president at the time following the dramatic events of October 5-6, 2020, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.
For many years, the relationship between Tashiev and President Japarov was widely regarded as one of the most durable and influential political alliances in the country. Their cooperation predates their rise to power: back in the early 2010s, they repeatedly stood on the same side of key political processes and even went through a shared criminal case in 2012, a period that ultimately strengthened their personal and political bond.
After the October 2020 upheaval, the tandem took its final shape. Japarov assumed the presidency, while Tashiev became head of the State Committee for National Security and emerged as a central pillar of the power bloc, overseeing the most high-profile cases, shaping security policy, and acting as a de facto closest confidant of the presidential team.
In expert circles, their partnership was often described as the strongest political duo in Kyrgyzstan, and any potential staff changes involving Tashiev were seen as a signal of serious shifts in the country’s power configuration.
In recent months, rumors circulated within political circles about a possible presidential bid by the security chief. However, Tashiev repeatedly stated that he had no intention of running for president and publicly reaffirmed his support for Japarov.
