Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan Sign 13 Deals to Cement Cooperation

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have taken a major step forward in their bilateral relations by signing 13 agreements covering various fields of cooperation during Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov’s state visit to Tajikistan.

A highlight of the visit was the signing of a Confidence-Building Measures Agreement, marking a fresh chapter in ties between the two neighbors following a period of heightened tensions, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

Additional accords focused on collaboration in tourism, migration, industry, cultural, and humanitarian sectors, reinforcing the commitment of both countries to deepen their partnership. This visit marked President Japarov’s first official trip to Tajikistan and was described by both sides as a significant milestone in their relationship.

After the meetings, Presidents Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Japarov expressed satisfaction with the progress made, particularly highlighting the completion of the primary phase of border demarcation. They stressed that efforts to finalize the remaining border sections continue under a spirit of constructive dialogue and mutual understanding.

The border dispute had been a major source of conflict for years, resulting in armed clashes, border closures, and a sharp drop in trade between 2021 and 2022. However, relations have improved markedly over the past two years. In March 2025, the two countries signed a historic border agreement and opened two official crossing points.

On July 8, following the high-level talks at the Palace of the Nation, the presidents jointly took part in a virtual ceremony to inaugurate the Tojvaron-Karamyk border checkpoint on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border. The ceremony was attended by local officials and residents from the neighboring border districts of Lakhsh (Tajikistan) and Chong-Alay (Kyrgyzstan).
