Chief of Staff of the President of Kyrgyzstan Kanybek Tumanbaev has announced that Azerbaijan committed to building a modern children’s hospital in Bishkek.
The decision to build the hospital in Bishkek followed high-level talks between Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.
Originally, plans called for the hospital to be located in the Issyk-Kul region, but after President Japarov’s official visit to Azerbaijan and negotiations, the location was changed to Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek.
Tumanbaev highlighted the significance of the project, calling it “a gift from Ilham Aliyev to the people of Kyrgyzstan.”
A major expansion project is underway at the National Center for Maternal and Child Health in Kyrgyzstan, with a new pediatric hospital wing set to be equipped with advanced medical infrastructure and specialized care units. Officials confirmed that preparatory work for the facility has already begun.
Director of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health Shaiyrbek Sulaimanov said that the project involves the construction of a new building adjacent to the existing children's hospital. The foundation stone was laid in May 2023.
“Funding was initially expected from Azerbaijan. The preliminary design outlines a three-story building with a basement floor, primarily housing a surgical complex where we plan to develop minimally invasive surgical capabilities,” said Sulaimanov.
While an official timeline for completion is still pending, the project marks a major investment in Kyrgyzstan’s pediatric and maternal health infrastructure.
Sulaimanov noted that the National Center for Maternal and Child Health currently handles up to 30,000 inpatients and around 200,000 outpatients annually, underscoring the need for expanded capacity and modern facilities.
In May 2024, the Presidential Press Service announced that the new hospital will include 350 beds and house a range of specialized departments. These include:
A reception ward with isolation units
Stem cell transplantation services
Intensive care units for oncology and oncohematology
Palliative care
Orthopedics and trauma surgery
Microsurgery
Gastroenterology with liver transplant services
Specialized nursing and support care
President Sadyr Japarov previously expressed confidence that the hospital would begin receiving mothers and children with complex health conditions by the second half of 2025.
