Norway’s government has announced that Russian military aircraft violated its airspace three times this year, marking the first such incidents in more than ten years.
The breaches occurred on April 25 and August 18 over the Barents Sea, and on July 24 above an uninhabited area in Finnmark-Norway’s northernmost county that borders Russia. Each violation lasted between one and four minutes, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre commented on the incidents, saying it is unclear whether the incursions were deliberate or accidental navigational errors.
"We can't determine whether this was done deliberately or whether it was due to navigation errors," Gahr Stoere said. "Regardless of the reason, this is not acceptable and we have made that clear to Russian authorities."
Though rare, the Norwegian government stressed that these violations are concerning given the current heightened tensions in the region.
