U.S.-Iran Conflict to Drive Up Costs for Domestic and International Air Travel

Airlines are increasing airfares and fees in response to higher jet fuel costs.

Jet fuel prices have soared amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, The Caspian Post reports, citing foreign media.

At Louis Armstrong International Airport, some travelers were relieved they bought their tickets before the conflict began.

“Yes, ma’am I am. Actually I was able to use a ticket that i had not used previously, so that worked out well for me,” said Kim Boyd, who was traveling back to Chicago.

Eddie Pullaro, who was traveling with his wife to Colorado, agreed.

“Yes, ma’am, we bought it about two months ago, we got kids living in Colorado,” he said.

The International Air Transport Association says the average global jet fuel price has risen to more than $200 per barrel, up from roughly $99 at the end of February.

Now, airfare prices and some airline fees are increasing.

“They are increasing. i have been seeing a lot of it, especially to really any destinations. most of my clients tend to fly, you know, the bigger airlines, you know, your Delta’s, your United’s, your American airlines. and so, it’s pretty much standard across the board that, you know, the bigger airlines, they are, you know, the costs are increasing,” said Courtney Fontenot, owner of Breezy Travel and Destinations.

Fontenot is also on the board of directors of the Greater New Orleans chapter of the American Society of Travel Advisors.

“Especially, I noticed it really, you know, with the Saints game that we’re talking about coming up in Paris. and a lot of people have been reaching out to me about, you know, traveling for that.and so, the flights have been higher, higher than what I’ve seen in previous times.”

The Associated Press reports the head of the International Energy Agency is warning Europe has about six weeks of jet fuel left. He told the AP he is concerned about possible flight cancellations if oil supplies remain impacted by U.S.-Iran tensions.

“Definitely make sure you’re getting travel insurance because cancellations and delays, those things might happen.”

Even if tensions between the U.S. and Iran were to improve overnight, it would take time for jet fuel costs to decline and, by extension, for airfare to drop.

Some travelers say they will travel less or not at all if airfares are too high.

“Yes, I will be flying less, yes,” said Boyd. “I just bought a $1,200 ticket, actually we both did to Vietnam last month.”

Pullaro said he would curtail his travel.

“I would in the future,” he said.

Fontenot said there are steps travelers can take to ease higher costs.

“If you can be flexible about your travel dates that might be helpful. If you can be flexible about some of the airlines or the flights that you’re choosing or the carriers that you’re working with, some lower-cost, lower-cost airlines, you might find that, you know, if you can find a lower ticket cost and things like that, that might be helpful,” she said.
