Deadly Double Blast in Ukraine's Lviv Kills Officer, Injures 25

A deadly double explosion has rocked the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, killing a 23-year-old police officer and injuring 25 others.

The blasts occurred shortly after midnight on February 22, as officers responded to a reported break-in at a downtown shop, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.

According to Ukraine’s National Police, homemade explosive devices had been hidden in trash bins near the scene. The first device detonated when a patrol car arrived, and a second exploded minutes later as another crew reached the location.

The officer killed was identified as Viktoria Shpylka, who had joined the force at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Among the injured, 11 people were hospitalized, including six law enforcement officers in serious condition.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a suspect had been detained. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that the 33-year-old suspect, from the Rivne region, is believed to have acted on instructions from Russian special services. Investigators are now working to uncover other possible collaborators.

Regional prosecutors have opened a terrorism investigation. The attack comes just days before the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, amid a fresh wave of missile and drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure, residential buildings, and railways.
