Explosions in Russia's Cheboksary as Drone Targets Military-Industrial Site

Unidentified drones struck the city of Cheboksary in Russia’s Chuvash Republic early morning, with reports indicating that a local military-industrial facility may have been the intended target.

The first explosion was recorded around 02:40 (GMT+3), followed by additional blasts heard on the city’s outskirts and near the village of Lapsary, about 10 kilometers away. Residents reported seeing fire and thick smoke rising from one of Cheboksary’s districts, The Caspian Post reports, citing Ukrainian media.

Videos circulating on social networks appear to show a drone hitting a facility in the area. Several Russian outlets suggest that the VNIIR-Progress military plant - previously targeted earlier this year - may have been struck again.

The head of the Chuvash Republic, Oleg Nikolayev, confirmed the drone attack but did not specify which site was damaged. He said no casualties were reported, though evacuations are being carried out as a safety measure.

The VNIIR-Progress plant produces Kometa/Kometa-M satellite signal receivers, key components used to shield systems from electronic warfare. These modules are installed in numerous Russian missiles, including Kalibr, Kh-69, Iskander-M, and Banderol, as well as UAVs such as Orlan-10, Orion, Kartograf, Harpia-A1, and others.

This is not the facility’s first incident. Earlier in the summer, Nikolayev confirmed that two drones crashed into the plant, causing a fire and briefly halting production.
