Tehran is working to establish railway routes to the cities of Merv (Turkmenistan) and Dushanbe (Tajikistan), aimed at further strengthening Iran's ties with neighboring Central Asian countries. This was announced by Jabbar Ali Zakeri, Director General of the National Railway Company of Iran (RAJA).
According to him, these new routes are part of Iran's strategy to modernize its transport infrastructure and strengthen regional cooperation, The Caspian Post reports citing foreign media.
It has not yet been announced when the railway connection with the countries of Central Asia will start operating.
Jabbar Ali Zakeri also announced the imminent launch of two new railway routes that will connect Iran with Turkey, Afghanistan and the countries of Central Asia. One of the new routes will connect Tehran with Ankara, and it will be launched within the next two months. The second route, Tehran - Herat, will be operational by the end of next month.
These areas will open up new opportunities for the transportation of people and goods, as well as for the implementation of strategic projects in the field of trade and investment. An important element of these initiatives is the development of tourist trains. asiaplustj.info.
The General Director also raised the issue of the discrepancy between the development of railway tracks and the rolling stock fleet. Between 150 and 300 km of new railway tracks are being built in Iran every year, but the rolling stock needs to be updated for the network to function properly. 300 new passenger cars will arrive in the country this year. A contract has also been signed with the Chinese side for the supply of new wagons, the head of the company said.
