Maritime shipping remained the leading mode of transport for Turkish exports during the first five months of the year, accounting for 56.2 per cent of the country’s total outbound trade, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
From January to May, Türkiye exported goods worth $110.9 billion, marking a 3.4 per cent year-on-year increase. Of this, $62.2 billion was transported by sea-up from $60.8 billion in the same period last year, The Caspian Post reports via Turkish media.
Road transport followed, contributing $35.3 billion or 32 per cent of total exports. Air cargo exports rose sharply, up 19 per cent year-on-year to $11.7 billion, while rail exports stood at $757.6 million. Exports by other transport methods totaled $791.4 million.
On the import side, sea freight also led the way, with $80.9 billion worth of goods-more than half of Türkiye’s total imports of $152.2 billion for the five-month period. Imports by road totaled $27.9 billion, air accounted for $22.3 billion, and rail brought in $1.4 billion. Other transport modes contributed $19.4 billion in imports.
