Putin May Order One-Day Pause in Strikes if Ukraine Holds Vote

Russian President Vladimir Putin would be prepared to order a halt to strikes on Ukraine for the day of a potential election, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Commenting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal for a 60-day ceasefire to allow Ukraine to hold a presidential election, Peskov said Moscow was willing to refrain from attacks specifically on election day, according to ASTRA.

“It is obvious that Kyiv does not really want to hold elections. It is absolutely clear. And they do not need a 60-day ceasefire for elections, but rather to regroup, recover and continue the war. The president has already spoken about this, but in this case, I can say on his behalf, with full responsibility, that if Kyiv really wants to hold elections, the President of the Russian Federation, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, will be ready to issue an order not to strike Ukraine on election day. On election day specifically,” Peskov said.

He also claimed that Moscow had been prepared to resume peace talks after Russia’s State Duma elections, but accused Ukraine of launching what he described as unprecedentedly large-scale attacks on Moscow and attempting to disrupt the vote.

Peskov further alleged that Ukraine had bombed polling stations and killed several members of local election commissions in what Russia calls its “new regions.”
