Azerbaijani Chess Star Suleymanli Stuns World No. 1 Carlsen

Azerbaijani chess player Aydin Suleymanli delivered one of the biggest surprises of the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championship in Hong Kong by defeating chess icon Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top-ranked player and a five-time world champion, The Caspian Post reports.

Suleymanli’s success contributed to a notable team achievement, as Azerbaijan’s Odlar Yurdu secured a 3.5-2.5 victory over WR Chess, one of the leading contenders for the title.

The WR Chess lineup included several elite grandmasters, among them Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Following the win, Odlar Yurdu finished the tournament in eighth place, collecting a total of 15 points.
