The 107th meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Economic Council took place in Tajikistan’s Dushanbe city, where member states addressed a broad agenda comprising 27 key issues.
Of these, 17 topics are scheduled to be presented at the upcoming Council of Heads of Government meeting on September 29 in Minsk, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.
One of the primary topics discussed was the elimination of trade barriers within the CIS region. The High-Level Working Group reported significant progress, resolving 37 out of 42 submitted claims, signaling positive momentum toward deeper economic integration.
Tajikistan also introduced a forward-looking initiative for the digitalization of multimodal transport corridors, aimed at improving logistics efficiency, reducing costs, and fostering stronger trade and economic ties across member countries.
CIS member states adopted a Strategy for Cooperation in the Digital Economy and Information Society, establishing shared principles for building a cohesive digital space through 2035. Additionally, they endorsed the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development (2026-2035), which emphasizes scientific sovereignty and enhanced collaboration in priority research and technology sectors.
The Council placed a strong emphasis on innovation infrastructure, supporting the expansion of business incubators, knowledge transfer centers, and mechanisms for the commercialization of technologies. These initiatives aim to accelerate startup creation, promote technological adoption, and enhance regional competitiveness.
In a landmark decision, the CIS Economic Council declared 2026 as the Year of Health Protection within the Commonwealth. A detailed action plan will guide joint efforts to safeguard public health, encourage experience-sharing among member states, and promote collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Council also reviewed issues related to intellectual property rights, subsoil resource management, and support mechanisms for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The next CIS Economic Council meeting is scheduled to be held on December 5 in Moscow, where progress on the discussed strategies and initiatives will be further evaluated.
