Earthquake in Tajikistan Destroys 94 Homes, Claims Child’s Life

A quake that struck Tajikistan on Sunday destroyed 94 homes and claimed the life of a child in two districts, according to the Tajik Emergency Situations Committee.

According to the preliminary information, the quake razed 40 homes and damaged five homes, three teahouses and a school outbuilding in the Gulhani village in the Rasht district. It also killed a child in the Ushturpast village, The Caspian Post reports citing Interfax.

There is also preliminary information that the quake razed 54 homes, damaged 45 homes, caused slight damage to 61 homes and two schools, ruined 196 utility buildings, and damaged three teahouses and a healthcare establishment in the Tajikabad district.

No casualties were reported in the Tajikabad district.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon set up a commission led by Deputy Prime Minister Sulaimon Ziyozoda to study the situation on the ground, evaluate the damage, and coordinate mitigation efforts.

A quake occurred in Tajikistan at 9:24 a.m. on April 13, the Geophysical Service of the Tajik National Academy of Sciences said. The quake epicenter was located 160 kilometers northeast of Dushanbe and 21 kilometers east of the Rasht district. It had 5-6 magnitude in the epicenter, 4-5 magnitude in the Rasht district, and 3 magnitude in Dushanbe.

Three more tremors with the epicenter in the Rasht region were recorded in Tajikistan on April 13 after the initial quake.

Another quake happened in Tajikistan on Monday morning. Same as on Sunday, its epicenter was located in the Rasht district east of Dushanbe.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said a 4.6-magnitude quake occurred at 5:45 a.m. 37 kilometers north of the Rasht district center.
