Tajik Leader Meets Japanese Officials to Expand Cooperation

During his visit to Tokyo for the first Central Asia-Japan Summit, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has held a series of high-level meetings with leading Japanese officials and organizational representatives.

The discussions focused on bilateral cooperation and joint projects in economy, science, and technology, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.

Cooperation with JICA

President Rahmon met with Akihiko Tanaka, President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to discuss strategic projects in energy, agriculture, transport, and healthcare.

Two grant agreements were signed for building substations and modernizing cargo scanning equipment at customs posts. Discussions also covered attracting Japanese investments, including concessional yen loans, and expanding “green” energy initiatives and the JDS program in medicine, nanotechnology, IT, and environmental protection. Plans were also made to establish a Tajik-Japanese center for innovation and digital technologies.

Cooperation with ROTOB

President Rahmon met with Masami Iijima, President of the Japan-Russia and CIS Trade Association (ROTOBO), to deepen economic and trade ties. The talks highlighted Tajikistan’s strategic location, unique resources, and human potential, with opportunities in agriculture, textiles, pharmaceuticals, AI, banking, small hydroelectric plants, and renewable energy.

Inter-parliamentary Cooperation

A meeting with Keiji Furukawa, Chairman of the Tajikistan-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, focused on joint projects in healthcare, science, education, and transport, as well as supporting startups, tech parks, and IT specialist training.

Cooperation with JOGMEC

President Rahmon also met Ichi Takahara, Executive Director of the Japan Organization for Metallurgical and Energy Security (JOGMEC), discussing cooperation in energy and mining, modernizing extraction and processing technologies, and expanding renewable and green energy projects in Tajikistan.

These discussions signal a significant boost in Tajik-Japanese cooperation across technology, energy, trade, and human capital development.
