Tajikistan has reported a notable increase in freight transport volumes, with a 9.2 per cent rise recorded across all modes of transport in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

A total of 66.6 million tons of cargo was transported between January and June 2025, reflecting a 9.3 per cent year-on-year increase, The Caspian Post reports, citing Tajik media.

Road transport remained the dominant mode, accounting for 63 million tons, or 94.6 per cent of the total volume. This figure includes cargo moved by government ministries, agencies, and private operators involved in commercial logistics.

Rail freight also saw a substantial rise, with 3.6 million tons of goods transported - a 12.4 per cent increase over the same period in 2024. This includes loaded, unloaded, and transit cargo.

In a related development, Tajikistan’s Minister of Transport recently proposed the establishment of a Unified Digital Platform under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to coordinate multimodal transport operations. The initiative aims to strengthen connectivity among member states, which the minister identified as a critical factor for sustainable economic growth and regional food security.
