The Republic of Armenia has marked its 34th Independence Day with a renewed focus on deepening diplomatic and economic ties with Turkmenistan.
Armenian Ambassador to Turkmenistan Arsen Avagyan highlighted the growing momentum in bilateral cooperation across the economic, cultural, and humanitarian sectors, The Caspian Post reports via Turkmen media.
Speaking during the celebrations, Avagyan emphasized that Armenia-Turkmenistan relations are built on mutual respect and historical ties, and are evolving into a strong, equal partnership.
High-Level Visit Reinforces Partnership
A recent visit by Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan to Ashgabat from August 4 to 7 served as a key moment in advancing this relationship. During his official trip, President Khachaturyan met with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to discuss expanding cooperation in trade, culture, and education.
Avagyan noted that trade between the two countries has shown tangible growth:
$22.2 million in bilateral trade was recorded in 2024
$18.4 million in trade was recorded in just the first seven months of 2025
Armenia primarily exports industrial and food products, while Turkmenistan exports energy resources and textiles.
Cultural and Educational Bridges
Cultural ties between Armenia and Turkmenistan are also strengthening. In October 2024, Armenian Culture Days were held in Ashgabat, and in November, the State Symphony Orchestra of Turkmenistan performed a special concert marking the 100th anniversary of French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour.
During his visit, President Khachaturyan visited the Armenian church in Turkmenbashi and the mausoleum of 15th-century Turkmen emirs of the Kara Koyunlu dynasty in Armenia-symbolic acts that underscore the historical and cultural interconnectedness of the two nations.
In the education sector, cooperation is also on the rise. Armenian students regularly participate in academic Olympiads in Turkmenistan, often earning top awards.
Armenia’s Economy on the Rise
The Independence Day events took place amid a backdrop of strong economic performance in Armenia:
GDP grew by 5.9 per cent in 2024
The economy expanded by 7 per cent from January to July 2025
Exports surpassed $9 billion
Inflation remains low at 1.5 per cent
Tourism hit record highs
Armenia also chairs the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in 2025, focusing on empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and boosting industrial-agricultural development across the region.
Looking Ahead
“The Armenia-Turkmenistan relations rest on a strong historical foundation and continue growing in the spirit of trust and equal partnership,” Avagyan stated. “These relations provide a reliable platform for launching new initiatives and expanding cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations.”
As Armenia looks toward the future, its increasingly robust ties with Turkmenistan serve as a key pillar of its regional engagement and foreign policy strategy.
