China’s National Petroleum Company (CNPC) is set to begin work on Phase Four of Turkmenistan’s massive Galkynysh gas field.
Once fully operational, this sector is expected to produce about 30 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year, with Turkmenistan providing all financing, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.
China remains the largest buyer of Turkmen gas, importing roughly 40 bcm annually. However, Turkmenistan continues emphasizing export diversification, including the TAPI pipeline project through Afghanistan, with a projected capacity of 33 bcm per year, and the potential trans-Caspian pipeline to Europe.
The Galkynysh field is divided into seven developmental phases. So far, only Phase One, also developed by CNPC, is operational, producing about 30 bcm annually. Negotiations are ongoing with CNPC and Abu Dhabi’s National Oil Company for phases two and three.
Independent analysts estimate that Galkynysh, along with Garakol and Yashlar fields, hold 27.4 trillion cubic meters of gas, enough to support annual exports of 200 bcm for decades, securing Turkmenistan’s role as a key global gas supplier.
