Turkmen President Pushes Global Unity and Development in UN General Assembly Keynote

During the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has delivered a keynote speech centered on global security, peace, and sustainable development.

Outlining Turkmenistan’s position on key international challenges, he introduced a range of proposals aimed at strengthening international dialogue and cooperation, The Caspian Post informs via Turkmen media.

A Call for a New Global Order

President Berdimuhamedov emphasized the urgent need for a fundamental shift toward coordinated dialogue among states and international bodies. He stressed that the UN’s primary role remains safeguarding peace, security, and the legal foundations of the international system. Turkmenistan views this General Assembly session as a crucial moment to foster a stronger and more balanced global framework.

Highlighting the Role of Neutrality

Drawing attention to Turkmenistan’s status as a permanently neutral country, the President proposed adding a special agenda item titled “Neutrality for Peace and Security” to the Assembly’s discussions. He described neutrality as an essential tool for ensuring stability and sustainable development worldwide. Turkmenistan plans to submit a draft resolution on the “Role and Significance of the Policy of Neutrality in Maintaining and Strengthening International Peace, Security, and Sustainable Development.” President Berdimuhamedov also expressed gratitude for the international recognition of Turkmenistan’s neutrality 30 years ago, a milestone that has deeply influenced the nation’s foreign policy.

Ambitious Proposals for Global Dialogue and Cooperation

Among several initiatives presented, Turkmenistan proposed:

World Summit on a Culture of Peace and Trust: Aiming to develop a global Code of International Trust based on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, this summit would set a universal framework for international relations.

Central Asia as a Space of Peaceful Coexistence: An International Forum to revive Central Asia’s historical role as a bridge between East and West, fostering dialogue and cooperation.

International Mediation Day: To highlight the critical importance of diplomacy and neutral platforms in conflict prevention and resolution.

Year of International Law (2028): Declaring 2028 as the Year of International Law to strengthen legal foundations for global peace and cooperation.

Addressing Economic, Environmental, and Technological Challenges

President Berdimuhamedov also addressed key non-diplomatic issues, proposing:

UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035): A dedicated period to unite efforts in developing sustainable transport corridors.

Energy Security: A draft resolution stressing the importance of reliable and stable energy connectivity for sustainable development.

Digital Integration: Establishing a Global Platform for Digital Integration to promote fair and trusted digital growth.

Regional Center to Combat Desertification: A new initiative to address environmental challenges in Central Asia.

Caspian Environmental Forum: Proposed for 2026 to advance regional cooperation on environmental issues.

International Day of Multilingual Diplomacy: To encourage intercultural dialogue and support multilingual communication in diplomacy.

Reaffirming Strategic Cooperation with the UN

In closing, President Berdimuhamedov reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with the United Nations, emphasizing the UN’s unique role as the global guarantor of peace, development, and security.
