Turkmenistan has condemned attacks on vessels in the Caspian Sea, stressing that the waterway must remain a place of peace, cooperation and good-neighborly relations.

Such incidents are unacceptable, The Caspian Post reports via the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

“On July 25, 2026, international media reported an attack on a vessel in the waters of the Caspian Sea. In this regard, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry declares the inadmissibility of such actions,” the statement said.

As a Caspian littoral state and a country with a permanent neutrality status recognized by the United Nations, Turkmenistan emphasized the importance of preserving stability in the region.

“Turkmenistan emphasizes that the Caspian is a sea of peace, harmony and good-neighborliness,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The statement comes after Iran’s Foreign Ministry reported that a vessel sailing under the Iranian flag was attacked in the Caspian Sea early on July 25.

According to Iranian authorities, one sailor was killed and another was injured in the incident. The vessel was reportedly carrying civilian cargo from Russia’s Astrakhan port to Iran’s Anzali port.

Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said the reported attack on the Iranian commercial vessel would not go unanswered.

The incident has added to regional concerns over the security of civilian shipping in the Caspian Sea, a strategically important waterway shared by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan.
