Turkmenistan and Georgia are stepping up interparliamentary cooperation following a high-level meeting in Tbilisi that signals a new chapter in bilateral relations.
An official cooperation agreement between the two legislatures was signed by Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and Chairwoman of the Mejlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan Dunyagozel Gulmanova, who is on an official visit to Georgia, The Caspian Post reports via Georgian media.
First-Ever Visit Marks a Milestone
The visit marks the first time the Speaker of Turkmenistan’s Mejlis has traveled to Georgia - a move both sides described as highly significant for expanding bilateral cooperation.
Officials highlighted the steady growth of relations between the two countries, pointing to a series of high-level exchanges in recent years. Strengthening parliamentary diplomacy was identified as a priority area for future engagement.
Expanding Multilateral Coordination
Talks also focused on cooperation within international parliamentary platforms, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
Papuashvili emphasized Georgia’s strategic position along key international transport corridors and expressed readiness to deepen connectivity and economic ties with Turkmenistan.
Mutual Support on Sovereignty and Neutrality
Gulmanova reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while thanking the Georgian side for backing Turkmenistan’s policy of permanent neutrality.
Over 30 Years of Diplomatic Relations
Turkmenistan and Georgia established diplomatic relations in July 1992. Since then, cooperation has expanded across economic and humanitarian sectors. In 2022, the two countries launched direct air connections, further strengthening business and people-to-people ties.
