Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) in Awaza, where both sides highlighted the special significance of 2025, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the UN and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality.
President Berdimuhamedov warmly welcomed Guterres and expressed gratitude for his active participation in the conference, The Caspian Post reports per Turkmen media.
He voiced strong confidence that the forum would successfully drive forward the Implementation Programme adopted in December 2024, aiming to benefit landlocked developing countries.
Guterres, in turn, expressed his pleasure at returning to Turkmenistan and praised the country’s proactive approach to tackling critical challenges. He highlighted Turkmenistan’s role as a key strategic partner of the United Nations in promoting peace and sustainable development worldwide.
Additionally, 2025 has been declared the International Year of Peace and Trust, an initiative spearheaded by Turkmenistan.
Both sides expressed optimism that the Awaza conference would be a landmark event in advancing global sustainable development, fostering regional connectivity, and developing new transport corridors.
Guterres also commended Turkmenistan’s achievements in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and its peacekeeping contributions, emphasizing that the country’s efforts benefit humanity as a whole.
