FAO, Uzbekistan Boost Greenhouse Agriculture with Cutting-Edge Collaboration

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Agriculture and supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea, has officially handed over two advanced greenhouses to Fergana State University.

This milestone is part of the “Smart Agriculture for the Next Generation” project, aimed at promoting innovation and resilience in Uzbekistan’s agricultural sector, The Caspian Post informs per Uzbek media.

The newly installed facilities include a 100-square-meter seedling production greenhouse and a 284-square-meter model demonstration greenhouse. Both are equipped with cutting-edge irrigation, cooling, and heating systems, mosquito nets, and modern shading and thermal insulation curtains. These greenhouses will function as practical training centers for students, research hubs, and demonstration sites for climate-resilient vegetable cultivation techniques.

The handover ceremony brought together representatives from FAO headquarters in Rome, officials from the Fergana regional government and agricultural departments, university administrators, faculty, students, and beneficiaries from Fergana, Andijan, and Namangan regions. The event featured opening speeches, a symbolic ribbon-cutting, guided tours, and the distribution of FAO’s instructional materials on sustainable vegetable production.

“These greenhouses serve as true laboratories where our students and researchers can innovate and strengthen Uzbekistan’s horticultural science,” said Kakhramon Davronov, Head of the Department of Horticulture and Viticulture at Fergana State University.

The project extends beyond academic purposes by aiming to support rural communities. The greenhouses will be used to develop and refine vegetable cultivation methods that will later be shared with local farmers, directly contributing to enhanced food security and sustainable agricultural practices across the country.

FAO Programme Coordinator Guido Santini emphasized the project’s unique role in uniting generations: “This initiative brings together experienced farmers, dedicated researchers, and young students-all working collectively toward a sustainable agricultural future.”
