Samarkand to Welcome Climate Forum

This week, the international community's attention will once again be focused on Samarkand. This ancient yet vibrant city, known as the "Gateway to the East," will host the first "Central Asia - European Union" summit and the First International Climate Forum.

The city is currently actively preparing to host these significant forums. Streets have already been decorated with flags of Central Asian countries and the European Union, as well as symbols of the forum, The Caspian Post reports citing UzA.

Leaders from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, along with representatives from the European Union, the United Nations, international financial institutions, prominent environmental organizations, and delegations from over 80 countries, are expected to participate in the forum. This broad representation underscores a shared commitment to green transformation and sustainable regional development.

The upcoming forum, titled “Central Asia Facing Global Climate Challenges: Consolidation for Shared Prosperity”, will serve as a high-level platform for promoting dialogue on green economic development and climate resilience. Primary attention will focus on regional and international cooperation. The Climate Forum will feature expert panels, plenary sessions, and policy dialogues on key areas, including the expansion of renewable energy use, integrated water resource management, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable urban development.

One of the central topics for discussion will be the tragedy of the Aral Sea, a vivid example of an environmental catastrophe on a global scale. Experts and government representatives will examine comprehensive solutions for rehabilitating affected lands, combating desertification, and mitigating the socio-economic impacts of climate change.

Following the event, a concluding document, the Regional Green Development Concept, will be presented, laying the groundwork for a unified regional perspective on climate change among Central Asian nations. This document outlines the approaches of leading international organizations in addressing the region’s environmental challenges.
