Uzbek President Calls for Bold UN Changes Amid Global Challenges

At the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has delivered a compelling address calling for urgent reform of the United Nations to better respond to today’s complex global challenges.

Highlighting the declining effectiveness of international institutions, the rise in conflicts, widening technological and social inequalities, and mounting economic and humanitarian crises, Mirziyoyev stressed the need for a “renewed and effective United Nations” capable of fostering consensus and addressing modern realities, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

Praising the leadership of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Uzbek leader reaffirmed his country’s strong support for the UN-80 Agenda and the Pact for the Future, while advocating for a comprehensive expansion and reform of the UN Security Council to better represent developing nations and enhance its ability to tackle global threats.

Showcasing Uzbekistan’s Progress and Commitment

President Mirziyoyev highlighted significant domestic achievements, noting a dramatic reduction in poverty from 35 per cent to 6.6 per cent through sustained reforms in education, science, innovative industries, green energy, transport infrastructure, and support for small businesses that have generated millions of new jobs.

Education access has improved markedly, with preschool enrollment soaring from 27 per cent to 78 per cent and higher education participation rising from 9 per cent to 42 per cent. Mirziyoyev proposed convening a World Summit on Vocational Education to promote international collaboration among educators.

In healthcare, Uzbekistan is advancing international partnerships targeting childhood cancer and other serious diseases. On gender equality, the president announced plans to strengthen women’s participation in public, political, and economic life, proposing a permanent Asia Women’s Forum to foster regional dialogue and cooperation.

Driving Regional Integration in Central Asia

Mirziyoyev praised growing cooperation in Central Asia, noting a fivefold increase in trade, investment, and transport. New joint investment funds, cross-border trade zones, and industrial partnerships are transforming the region into a vibrant economic hub. He cited the Consultative Meetings of Central Asian Leaders as vital to deepening regional integration and building a “New Central Asia.”

Addressing Global Crises and Promoting Peace

On Afghanistan, Mirziyoyev called for coordinated international efforts to foster peaceful development and enhance regional connectivity, proposing a UN resolution to establish transport and energy corridors through the country.

He urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and reaffirmed support for the “two states for two peoples” framework as the path to peace in the Middle East.

Regarding climate change, the Aral Sea disaster, and global water scarcity, the President announced plans to host a World Water Conservation Forum and encouraged international cooperation on AI-driven solutions in healthcare, education, and cultural preservation, proposing a global platform for sharing such innovations.

Youth and Cultural Initiatives

Emphasizing youth as key agents of global change, President Mirziyoyev proposed the launch of a Global Youth Movement for Peace, headquartered in Uzbekistan. He also outlined plans to establish a Center for Islamic Civilization to promote the nation’s rich spiritual and scientific heritage.

A Call for Solidarity and Dialogue

Concluding his speech, President Mirziyoyev called for greater global solidarity, open dialogue, and cooperation among nations. He reaffirmed Uzbekistan’s commitment to promoting intercultural understanding and contributing to a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world.
