Uzbekistan to Transform Reservoirs Into Major Tourism Destinations

Uzbekistan is planning a large-scale transformation of its water infrastructure into tourism destinations, with 25 major reservoirs set to become new leisure and travel hotspots for both locals and international visitors.

The initiative was announced by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a government meeting in the Fergana Region, where officials reviewed major development projects across the country, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

One of the flagship sites is the “Karkidon” reservoir in Kuvin district, where a modern tourist complex is already under construction. The area has been designed as a mixed eco-destination combining recreation, agriculture-based tourism, and outdoor activities, with an emergency response center established to ensure visitor safety.

The project is being developed under a presidential decree issued on April 1, 2025, with an estimated cost of 635 billion soums and covering 508 hectares. It includes eco-tourism zones, flower parks, lavender fields, guesthouses, restaurants, and an eco-market.

The complex will also feature 45 chalets and 57 guest houses, along with infrastructure for tourism and services. Once fully operational in 2027, it is expected to attract up to 750,000 visitors annually, create around 2,000 jobs, and generate up to $5 million in export-related services.

Future expansion plans include a 2-kilometer cable car, motocross tracks, karting areas, and a golf course, further positioning the site as a year-round tourism destination.

Similar projects are being developed across the country, including a major eco-tourism center in the Surxondaryo Region and other investment-driven resorts aimed at boosting regional economies and job creation.
