Uzbekistan Launches New Small Hydropower Plant in Tashkent Region

A new small-scale hydropower plant with an initial capacity of 320 kilowatts (kW) has officially been commissioned on the Damarik Canal in the Zangiata District of Uzbekistan's Tashkent Region.

The facility, developed by a private entrepreneur, marks the first phase of a larger project that aims to double its capacity to 640 kW upon completion. Already, the plant is generating half of its intended output, contributing to the region’s renewable energy supply, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

Once fully operational, the hydropower station is expected to produce approximately 3.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually-sufficient to meet the energy needs of around 1,300 local households. The project is seen as a step forward in Uzbekistan’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy mix and enhance sustainability at the community level.

To coincide with the launch, a seminar and training session was held for entrepreneurs and energy specialists interested in small hydropower development. The event served as a platform to share technical insights, promote private sector engagement, and encourage further investment in renewable energy across the country.

The new facility reflects a growing trend in Uzbekistan toward locally driven green energy projects aimed at improving energy access while reducing environmental impact.
