Uzbekistan’s electric vehicle (EV) market reached a new milestone in September, with 7,798 units sold - the highest monthly total on record.
The figure represents a 21.6% increase compared to August and an impressive 83.5% jump from the same month last year, The Caspian Post reports, citing Uzbek media.
Car sales in Uzbekistan fell for the second straight month, according to a report by the Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR).
In September, the Traffic Safety Department registered 84,600 passenger vehicles - a 6.4% decrease compared to August. On a year-on-year basis, demand fell by 16.7%, or 17,000 vehicles.
The sharpest declines in sales were recorded in the Surkhandarya and Navoi regions, as well as in Tashkent. Meanwhile, market activity increased in the capital region and the Syrdarya region.
The primary market segment saw the steepest drop in demand. Auto dealers sold 31,900 new cars - down 15.2% from August and 22% from the same month last year.
Locally produced vehicles maintained their leadership in absolute numbers (27,400 units), but demand for them dropped by 16% month-on-month and by more than a quarter year-on-year. Sales of imported cars (4,500 units) declined by 8.9% from August, but rose by one-third compared to last year.
Demand for used cars remained relatively stable, with 52,600 transactions - just 0.1% less than in the previous month. However, the annual decline reached 15%.
Monthly electric vehicle (EV) sales hit a new record - 7,798 units, up 21.6% from August and 83.5% higher than a year earlier.
The growth was mainly driven by new EVs, with more than 5,000 purchased in September. In the secondary market, sales slightly decreased compared to August but remained near peak levels (2,718 vehicles).
In total, 20,700 electric vehicles were sold in the third quarter - 2.2 times more than during the same period last year. The capital, along with the Tashkent and Samarkand regions, led EV sales.
