PM: Armenia Stands to Gain from Unimpeded Azerbaijan–Nakhchivan Route

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced that unimpeded connectivity between the main territory of Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic via Armenian territory offers mutual benefits for Armenia’s international and domestic transportation networks.

Pashinyan made these remarks at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, The Caspian Post reports via UN website.

"In the declaration signed in Washington on August 8, Armenia and Azerbaijan acknowledged the need to chart a path toward a brighter future. At last, the conditions are in place to initiate neighborly relations. This reality-one that must never be revised-opens the door to closing the chapter of hostility between our two nations," Pashinyan emphasized.

"In the same document, Armenia and Azerbaijan reaffirmed the importance of opening transportation links between the two countries to facilitate interstate, bilateral, and international transit. This should be done on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, with the aim of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity both within the region and beyond," he added.

Pashinyan also stated that there has been substantial progress in the relationship between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"The Statute on the Joint Activities of Border Demarcation Commissions between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been ratified and granted the highest legal force," Pashinyan said.

He also emphasized that both sides have managed to reach a consensus on the Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations, which was initialed in Washington on August 8.

"The highlight of the August 8 meeting at the White House was the adoption of a joint declaration, signed together with President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, following our negotiations. The declaration was also signed by US President Donald Trump as a witness," Pashinyan added.
