Wizz Air Launches New Base in Armenia

Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air officially launched its base at Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport on October 1.

The arrival of the Wizz Air Naples-Yerevan flight marked the official opening ceremony, The Caspian Post reports citing Armenian media.

Two Airbus A321neo aircraft will be based at Zvartnots Airport.

Marcelo Wende, CEO of Armenia International Airports CJSC - the operator of Zvartnots - said that Wizz Air is one of the most in-demand airlines globally. He added that it is a significant achievement that the airline has chosen Yerevan Airport as one of its bases.

Wende highlighted the new travel opportunities this brings for Armenian residents and noted that it will boost tourism.

Earlier on Tuesday, Wizz Air also launched Larnaca-Gyumri flights.

Wende said this was the first time a flight from the EU arrived in Gyumri, and that the airport there offers top-class service.

The CEO expressed hope that Yerevan Airport will expand its capacity and serve more flights in the future.

Wizz Air Hungary Operations Officer Roland Tischner said that the second aircraft will arrive in Armenia on October 26.

“In 2025, Wizz Air transported 72 million passengers and operates 34 bases in 16 countries. Armenia has now become one of them,” he said.

New destinations from both Yerevan and Gyumri will include Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, and other countries. The first flight to Prague commenced today.

“We thank the Armenian government for their support,” Tischner added.

Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan welcomed the airline’s entry. He said the government aims to reach an annual inbound tourism figure of 3,000,000.

“Years ago, reaching cities like Rome from Armenia required expensive and lengthy travel with multiple stopovers. Today, these routes are fast, affordable, and convenient. This is important not only for our citizens, but also for tourists from other countries who wish to visit Armenia,” he said.

Tourism Committee President Lusine Gevorgyan emphasized the significance of launching flights from Gyumri.

She said the government plans to invest in Gyumri’s tourism infrastructure over the next five years.“The city already has the potential to receive tourists, and direct flights will boost the development of the local economy - including hotels, businesses, restaurants, and services,” she said.
