Baku to Host Ministerial Meeting on Green Energy Corridor

A ministerial meeting on the Black Sea Energy project, a Green Energy Corridor linking Azerbaijan to Europe, is scheduled to take place in Baku in late June 2026, Farhad Mammadov, General Director of the Green Energy Corridor JV (GECO, Black Sea Energy), announced on LinkedIn.

According to him, at the recent meeting, the Board reviewed key developments since the previous session, including stakeholder engagement, project advancement, and preparations for the upcoming Ministerial Meeting in Baku at the end of June 2026, The Caspian Post reports, citing Report.

Particular attention was also given to budget planning for the 2027-2028 period, as well as technical matters related to the Black Sea seabed survey.

A significant part of the discussions was dedicated to the development strategy of the project. In this context, dedicated meetings were held with leading developers, including Xlinks and Zhero, who presented their respective visions and proposals regarding potential cooperation models and next steps.

"As we are approaching the final stage of the feasibility study and preparing to transition into an active post-feasibility phase, the focus is increasingly shifting toward execution and structuring. In this regard, the following key workstreams remain central: Integrated Project Management, Engineering Activities, Regulatory & EU Institutional Positioning and Acceleration, Commercial Strategy & Market Modelling, Finance Assessment," he wrote.

The implementation of this project is envisaged within the strategic partnership agreement for the development and transmission of green energy between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary, signed in Bucharest in 2022. This document marked an important step towards the formation of a green energy corridor to Europe.

The joint venture for the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe green corridor project was established under a memorandum of understanding signed between Georgia, Hungary, Romania, and Azerbaijan on July 25, 2023.

The Black Sea Submarine Energy Cable project is a major infrastructure project that will directly connect Georgia and Romania and link the power systems of the South Caucasus and Southeastern Europe. The submarine cable will be over 1,155 km long (1,115 km underwater and 40 km on land), with a voltage of 525 kV and a capacity of 1,300 MW. Completion of the submarine power cable across the Black Sea is scheduled for 2032.

The project is included in the European Union's list of Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI). The European Commission plans to allocate €2.3 billion for its implementation.
