Colombian Press Spotlights Azerbaijan’s Post-War Mine Problem

Colombian media has highlighted the ongoing mine contamination problem in Azerbaijan, calling for greater international solidarity to address one of the country’s most pressing humanitarian challenges.

In an article published by the Colombian news website, titled “Azerbaijan and the Mine Problem: A Question Requiring Greater Solidarity,” the focus is placed on the long-term dangers posed by landmines planted during the years of conflict, The Caspian Post reports via ZonaCero.

According to the report, vast areas of Azerbaijan remain contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance left from the years of occupation, creating serious risks for civilians and hindering reconstruction efforts and the safe return of displaced families.

Approximately 13.4% of Azerbaijan’s territory is affected, with more than one million landmines and unexploded devices still present. Since the end of the 2020 conflict, hundreds of civilians - including women and children - have been injured in mine explosions, while the overall number of victims over the past three decades exceeds 3,400 people.

Despite the scale of the challenge, the article also highlights significant progress in demining efforts led by the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), which has cleared hundreds of thousands of hectares of land and neutralized tens of thousands of explosive devices.

The report draws parallels with Colombia, which also faces a long-standing landmine issue, and notes growing dialogue between the two countries on possible cooperation in mine clearance and humanitarian demining.

It also emphasizes Azerbaijan’s broader international engagement, including support for humanitarian demining initiatives abroad through equipment, training, and technical assistance.

The article concludes that despite Azerbaijan’s efforts, international support remains limited, underlining the need for stronger global cooperation and solidarity to address the humanitarian impact of landmines.
