The EU has expressed hope for the imminent signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, signaling a potential end to decades of conflict.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made the remarks during a joint meeting with European Council President António Costa and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, The Caspian Post reports via local media.
"The draft peace treaty with Azerbaijan is a seismic moment. It brings decades of hostility to a close, and I hope the treaty can be signed as soon as possible," she said.
This optimism follows a high-level meeting held on July 10 in Abu Dhabi between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The talks began with delegations present and continued in a private one-on-one format, lasting over four hours.
The negotiations were described as constructive and focused on critical elements of the peace agenda, including the delimitation of borders, the opening and development of the Zangezur corridor, and the initialing of the peace agreement.
Both sides reached a broad consensus to continue the dialogue through various working groups and at higher political levels to ensure the successful implementation of the agreement.
