TV Berlin: Azerbaijan Is Germany's Largest Trading Partner in South Caucasus - VIDEO

TV Berlin, the capital's television broadcaster, has aired an extensive report highlighting the growing strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Germany, describing Azerbaijan as Germany's largest trading partner in the South Caucasus.

Azerbaijan's location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia has made it increasingly important to Germany and the European Union in the fields of energy security, trade, transport, and regional stability, The Caspian Post reports via

.

The broadcaster highlighted the recent visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Baku, where discussions focused on expanding cooperation in energy, transport, digital infrastructure, and regional connectivity. It also noted that the EU's new support package for transport connectivity in the South Caucasus reflects Brussels' view of Azerbaijan as a key pillar of Europe's strategy for resilience, energy security, and trade.

The report said Azerbaijan-Germany relations have entered a new phase, pointing to an intensified political dialogue in recent years. Since 2023, President Ilham Aliyev has made five visits to Germany, including two official visits to Berlin at the invitation of former Chancellor Olaf Scholz and three trips to attend the Munich Security Conference.

It also recalled that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier became the first German head of state to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan in April last year. The report further noted a recent phone conversation between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Aliyev, during which the German leader invited the Azerbaijani president to pay an official visit to Germany.

According to TV Berlin, Azerbaijan's strategic location has become increasingly important as the Middle Corridor emerges as one of the main trade routes linking Europe and Central Asia. The report stressed that reliable alternative logistics corridors are of growing importance for Germany's export-oriented economy, particularly amid geopolitical tensions affecting global trade routes.

Middle Corridor expert from Hamburg Mirko Novak said the route offers "the necessary infrastructure and opportunities to bring goods to market at low cost and in a competitive manner."

Energy cooperation was identified as one of the strongest pillars of bilateral relations. The report noted that following the Russia-Ukraine war, Azerbaijan increased its natural gas exports to Europe through the Southern Gas Corridor from around 8 billion cubic meters before the conflict to approximately 13 billion cubic meters annually. German companies Uniper, SEFE, and VNG currently purchase more than 3 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas each year.

The broadcaster also highlighted Azerbaijan's growing investments in wind and solar energy, saying the country aims to become a major supplier in future green energy projects linking the Caspian region with Europe. According to the report, this cooperation helps Germany diversify its energy sources rather than create new dependencies.

TV Berlin also emphasized Azerbaijan's efforts to normalize relations with Armenia, saying progress toward peace could unlock new opportunities for regional connectivity, trade, and economic integration between Europe and Central Asia.

The report noted that more than 200 German companies operate in Azerbaijan across sectors including engineering, construction, logistics, energy, and services, underscoring the country's importance as Germany's leading economic partner in the South Caucasus.

Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Germany, Nasimi Aghayev, said the partnership extends well beyond energy.

He said that energy security, economic resilience, stronger connectivity between Asia and Europe, and reliable supply chains had become key pillars of the German-Azerbaijani partnership, adding that the cooperation delivers significant benefits to both countries' citizens and economies.

The report concluded that, amid a changing geopolitical landscape, cooperation between Germany and Azerbaijan is increasingly centered on trade, transport connectivity, resilient supply chains, and regional stability, reinforcing Azerbaijan's growing strategic importance on Europe's geopolitical map.
