Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia's recent attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure was both a strategic move and a retaliatory response to a Ukrainian strike on the Taganrog military airfield, The Caspian Post reports citing TASS.

"For that reason as well," Peskov said responding to a question from reporters.

Earlier on Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Russia"s Armed Forces had launched high-precision strikes on Ukraine"s fuel and energy infrastructure, which generates power for its defense sector, in response to the attack on the Taganrog airfield with ATACMS missiles earlier this week. All targets were successfully hit, the Russian military specified.

On December 11, the Kiev regime hit the Taganrog airfield in southern Russia"s Rostov Region. An investigation revealed that six US-made ATACMS ballistic missiles were used in the attack. While no damage to the airfield was reported as the debris of ATACMS missiles fell, several personnel were injured. The Russian Defense Ministry subsequently vowed retaliation for the attack. Peskov stated earlier that the timing of the retaliatory strike would be at Russia's discretion.
