Georgia and Azerbaijan have successfully launched a digital permit system for international road freight transport, marking another step toward paperless cross-border logistics.

Under the new system, Georgian and Azerbaijani freight carriers will exchange and use electronic transport permits, eliminating the need for paper documentation. Georgia introduced a similar digital permit system with Türkiye earlier in July 2026, The Caspian Post reports via Sputnik Georgia.

Land Transport Agency Director Bakur Mikadze said that the digital platform simplifies administrative procedures, enables faster and more secure data exchange, reduces technical barriers, and creates a more transparent and efficient framework for managing international road freight transport.

He added that issuing and verifying transport permits electronically will significantly speed up cross-border freight operations and improve the efficiency of international logistics.

The system is based on bilateral cooperation, allowing Georgia and its partner countries to use a shared electronic platform for exchanging and administering transport permits.

Following successful negotiations, Georgia and Azerbaijan have already exchanged 1,000 electronic permits of each permit type for 2026, with a full transition to digital permits scheduled for 2027.

The initiative will boost the international road transport sector, simplify freight operations, and further strengthen Georgia's role as a regional transit hub.

Georgia and Azerbaijan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1992 and are strategic partners in major regional infrastructure projects, including the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, and the Southern Gas Corridor.
