Georgia's Rail Cargo Climbs to Highest Level in a Decade

Georgia's railway network transported its highest monthly volume of freight in a decade in June, highlighting the positive impact of major infrastructure upgrades and rising transit traffic, according to the country's Ministry of Economy.

Deputy Economy Minister Tamar Ioseliani said Georgian Railway carried 1,361,484 tons of cargo during the month, marking the highest monthly freight volume recorded over the past 10 years, The Caspian Post reports, citing Vestnik Kavkaza.

According to Ioseliani, the record-breaking result reflects the ongoing modernization and expansion of Georgia's railway infrastructure, which has significantly improved the network's operational capacity, reliability, and efficiency.

"It should be noted that the results achieved by Georgian Railway over the past year are clearly evident. Among the most significant projects are the modernization of the mountain pass section, completed in December 2025, and the full restoration of operations on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line, which has significantly strengthened the railway's role in the development of the Middle Corridor," she said.

The deputy minister emphasized that the modernization of the rail network, together with the reopening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, has further reinforced Georgia's position as a key transit hub along the Middle Corridor. The route is playing an increasingly important role in connecting Asia and Europe, boosting regional trade and strengthening Georgia's strategic significance in international transport and logistics.
