Azerbaijan has announced a full temporary suspension of truck traffic across its state border with Iran, following a drone attack that targeted civilian infrastructure in Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The decision comes after drones launched from Iranian territory struck several sites in Nakhchivan on March 5, including the Nakhchivan International Airport, The Caspian Post reports via the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers.
Officials said the attack targeted civilian facilities, with the airport terminal building damaged and several areas, including a local school, coming under fire. Several civilians were injured as a result of the strikes.
“In light of the current situation caused by these attacks, which contradict the norms and principles of international law, a decision has been made to temporarily suspend the movement of trucks, including transit vehicles, through all border crossing points on the Azerbaijani-Iranian state border,” the statement said.
Authorities reported that a drone flying from Iranian territory crashed into the airport building and exploded near a secondary school in Shakarabad village in the Babek district of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The explosion left four civilians injured and caused damage to nearby infrastructure.
Following the incident, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry demanded an immediate explanation from Tehran and called on the Iranian side to take urgent steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Dermichilou, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry, where Baku delivered a strong diplomatic protest.
