Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it attacked an alleged US-linked oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz as part of retaliatory strikes following US and Israeli assaults.
In a statement, the IRGC said the ATHE NOVA tanker “is still on fire after being hit by two drones,” describing the vessel as affiliated with American allies in the strategic waterway, The Caspian Post reports, citing Al Jazeera.
On Saturday, the paramilitary force also announced it had closed the Strait of Hormuz after the launch of US and Israeli attacks.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key global energy corridor, handling about one-fifth of the world’s traded oil, along with significant liquefied natural gas exports from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day - around 20 percent of global daily consumption - transit through the narrow passage.
