The Makhachkala Sea Commercial Port plans to establish ferry connections with Turkmenistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan by 2030, a move expected to significantly expand the transportation capabilities of the Caspian region.
As part of this initiative, the port is undergoing comprehensive infrastructure upgrades to prepare for new rail and road routes, The Caspian Post reports per Turkmen media.
The modernization project aims to increase the port’s annual cargo turnover by 2 million tons, enhancing the overall efficiency of logistics operations.
To accelerate cargo processing, a specialized berth area capable of accommodating up to 200 containers simultaneously will be constructed. This enhancement is designed to streamline loading and unloading activities and bolster the port’s attractiveness to international partners.
Makhachkala Sea Commercial Port is Russia’s only deepwater, ice-free port on the Caspian Sea and plays a critical role as a strategic transport hub. It connects Southern Russia with Central Asia, Iran, the South Caucasus, and other countries in the region, serving as a vital link in the broader regional transportation network.
