American Rail Giant Wabtec Sets Sights on Kazakhstan for Diesel Engine Manufacturing

American rail technology leader Wabtec has announced plans to begin manufacturing diesel engines in Kazakhstan in 2026, marking its first-ever diesel engine production outside the US.

The decision follows a recent visit by a delegation from Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), led by Chairman Talgat Aldybergenov, to Wabtec’s state-of-the-art plant in Grove City, Pennsylvania. During the visit, the Kazakh delegation toured facilities specializing in the production and overhaul of diesel engines for locomotives and heavy equipment, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

Officials from KTZ examined Wabtec’s latest innovations, including the use of alternative fuels, modernization of powertrains, and advanced digital monitoring and quality control systems. Discussions focused on boosting energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and adopting cutting-edge solutions that align with KTZ’s strategy to modernize and enhance its rolling stock.

The planned production at the Astana Diesel Service plant signifies a major step towards localizing production capabilities and increasing Kazakhstan’s technological independence in the rail sector.

Further cooperation between Wabtec and KTZ is anticipated in areas such as technology transfer, workforce development, and ongoing technical support for Kazakhstan’s locomotive fleet. The visit marks a milestone in the deepening partnership, reflecting KTZ’s commitment to adopting international best practices in the country’s transport infrastructure development.
