A resident of North Kazakhstan Region has made a remarkable discovery while fishing, unearthing the bone of an animal that roamed the Earth about 15,000 years ago.
Beskol village resident Asset Shaikin was fishing near the village of Baiterek when he noticed a large bone sticking out of the ground. After digging it up, he realized it was an extraordinary find, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Experts later confirmed its significance. Professor of North Kazakhstan University Anatoly Pleshakov identified the bone as the tibia of an unusually large mammoth, adding that additional remains of the same animal may still be buried in the area.
“Mammoth remains are rarely found in our region, and specimens of this size are even more uncommon,” Pleshakov said.
The discovery will be transferred to the North Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore for preservation and further research.
