President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a decree appointing Zhaslan Madiyev as the Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development.
Born in 1983 in Almaty, Madiyev brings a strong academic background, having earned degrees from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Columbia University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His education spans economics, public policy, and advanced technology-key areas for the role he now assumes, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Madiyev began his career in 2004 at Alliance Bank and has since held senior positions at a number of strategic institutions, including the Kazyna Sustainable Development Fund, Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund, Kazyna Capital Management, and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan. He also gained significant policy experience during his tenure at the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
In the corporate sector, he served as Vice President for Finance at Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the national railway operator. From 2019 to 2020, he held the post of Vice Minister of National Economy, where he contributed to national fiscal and economic planning.
Since October 2020, Madiyev has served as Deputy Chairman of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms, a key government body responsible for national development strategies.
His most recent appointment, on May 6, 2024, was as Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry, where he played a leading role in Kazakhstan’s digital transformation initiatives.
As Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development, Madiyev is now tasked with advancing Kazakhstan’s ambitions in AI, digital governance, and technological innovation, positioning the country as a leader in the region's digital future.
