Kazakh Leader Highlights Urgent Water, Ecological Challenges

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has drawn attention to transboundary water management issues and the ecological state of the Aral and Caspian Seas during the International Year of Peace and Trust forum in Turkmenistan.

He stressed that preserving water resources and ensuring their rational use amid growing shortages has become a strategic priority for Kazakhstan and its neighbors, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

President Tokayev noted that joint efforts and mutual compromise are needed to enhance the effectiveness of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, suggesting that Russia’s participation as an observer could support this goal.

Warning of the rapid and potentially irreversible shallowing of the Caspian Sea, President Tokayev announced Kazakhstan’s initiative to create an interstate program to protect the ecosystem and prevent further decline. He called on the global community to support these conservation efforts.

Earlier, President Tokayev also emphasized Kazakhstan’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan and promoting peace and stability in the region.
