Kazakh Patchwork Quilt Breaks World Record

A cultural milestone has been achieved in Kazakhstan, where a massive traditional quilt known as a quraq korpe has officially set a new world record for the largest patchwork quilt, celebrating the nation's rich heritage of textile art.

The project, titled “Alaman Quraq - 2025,” brought together 660 female artisans from every region of Kazakhstan to craft a stunning quilt covering 1,366 square meters. The achievement was officially certified by the Global Book of Records, marking the first-ever world record dedicated to Kazakh quraq art-a time-honored form of decorative patchwork sewing, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

The record-breaking initiative was spearheaded by Nurgul Abaykhan from the Ayagoz district, whose vision led to the creation of a project with no global parallel. Among the contributors were 34 craftswomen from the Abai and East Kazakhstan regions.

“Our goal was not just to break a record, but to show the world the unity of Kazakh mothers and the cultural power of quraq,” said Abaykhan during the ceremony in Almaty.

The quraq korpe, once a staple of nomadic Kazakh households, is traditionally made from scraps of fabric and symbolizes protection, unity, and family heritage. By reviving this ancient tradition on such a grand scale, the project has spotlighted the artistic legacy and communal spirit of Kazakh women.

The “Alaman Quraq - 2025” project is part of a broader national movement to preserve and promote Kazakhstan’s intangible cultural heritage.
