Kazakh Rescuers Save Hypothermic Teens in Almaty Highlands

A weekend mountain trip in Almaty, Kazakhstan, nearly turned into a tragedy after two teenagers were found suffering from hypothermia at high altitude.

The incident unfolded in the Medeu district at the Glade of Enthusiasts, located about 2,800 meters above sea level, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

The teens, both born in 2008, were descending from Furmanov Peak when they became exhausted and dangerously cold.

Realizing the severity of their condition, the teenagers managed to call for help. Emergency crews from the city’s Butaqty rescue station responded immediately, trekking through the mountainous terrain to reach them.

Rescuers successfully located the pair, escorted them down safely to Medeu, and ensured they were out of danger. Fortunately, no medical treatment was required, and the teenagers were able to return home on their own.

Officials are once again urging hikers to carefully prepare before heading into the mountains - stressing the importance of proper clothing, awareness of weather conditions, and reliable communication tools.

The rescue comes shortly after another large-scale operation in the Karaganda Region, where more than 400 travelers were saved after being trapped in heavy snow.
