Kazakhstan, China Launch Joint Grain Trading Platform Under Belt and Road Initiative

Kazakhstan and China are set to deepen their agricultural partnership with the launch of a joint grain trading platform aimed at boosting cross-border food trade and strengthening regional food security.

The initiative was announced during talks between Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Agriculture Yermek Kenzhekhanuly and Liu Huanxin, head of China’s National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration (NAFRA), The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.

The two sides discussed expanding agricultural trade, launching new investment projects, and improving supply chains under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

The upcoming Kazakhstan-China grain trading platform will operate through China’s National Internet Grain Trading Platform, allowing companies from both countries to trade grain and oilseed products via direct negotiations and competitive bidding.

Soybeans and other oilseed crops are expected to become the key focus of the new digital marketplace as both countries seek to expand agricultural exports and secure stable food supplies.

China remains one of Kazakhstan’s most important agricultural partners. Bilateral agricultural trade surged 36.8% last year to nearly $2 billion, while trade turnover jumped another 61.7% in the first quarter of 2026 alone.

Kazakhstan’s agricultural exports to China also continue to soar, driven by growing demand for feed products, vegetable oils, flax, sunflower seeds, and rapeseed oil.

The two countries have already signed export protocols covering 34 categories of agricultural goods, and more than 3,600 Kazakh enterprises are now approved to export products to the Chinese market.

Officials also discussed long-term grain and oilseed supply contracts, construction of logistics hubs and dry ports, and cooperation in storage and processing technologies as Kazakhstan positions itself as a major agricultural supplier for China and the wider region.
