Kazakhstan's capital Astana is experiencing severe winter weather on January 6, with blizzards, heavy snow, and icy roads.
Southwesterly winds have intensified to 15-20 m/s, occasionally reaching 23 m/s, increasing the risk of accidents and emergencies, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Authorities advise residents to stay home, monitor children closely, and avoid dangerous areas. People are urged to seek shelter indoors, avoid standing near walls, trees, billboards, or power lines, and walk carefully on icy roads. Shoes with thick, non-slip soles are recommended, and heavy objects should not be carried. Emergency calls can be made to 101 or 112.
Snow removal is underway citywide. On January 6, 2,953 workers and 1,828 snow-removal machines cleared 55,913 cubic meters of snow, completing over 4,000 truck trips. Since the start of winter, 1.7 million cubic meters of snow have been removed to disposal sites.
The Mayor’s Office urges residents to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety recommendations as blizzards continue to affect the capital.
