Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan Strike Deal to Boost Water Supply Amid Drought

Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have reached a bilateral agreement to increase water supply volumes in response to ongoing drought conditions and reduced river inflows.

The deal was concluded during a meeting between Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev and Chairman of the Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers Adylbek Kasymaliev, The Caspian Post reports per Kazakh media.

The two sides reviewed and coordinated the August operating schedules of key transboundary water systems, including the Naryn River cascade, the Talas River basin, and the Kirov and Orto-Tokoy reservoirs.

Efforts to address regional water shortages continued when Bozumbayev met in Tashkent with Uzbek Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov, alongside senior officials from Uzbekistan’s water and energy sectors. The discussions resulted in a joint commitment to eliminate water delivery delays within two weeks.

These coordinated regional efforts have ensured the uninterrupted completion of the 2025 growing season across Kazakhstan’s agricultural heartlands - specifically in the Zhambyl, Kyzylorda, and Turkistan regions.
